It was a long time coming, but after years of whispered thoughts and bright ideas, a team has come together to launch a North American Wheelchair Rugby club championships.... and they're doing a great job of it!
This international tournament features the top-5 US teams with the top-3 Canadian teams in a no-holds-barred battle for club supremacy on the continent. The fact that it's in a top-notch facility makes it all that much sweeter.
The venue is great, transportation terrific, and the food hits the spot according to the Canadian players who have checked in with me.
All we're missing is a few scores... but at least the first few game results have come in.
The North American Wheelchair Rugby Challenge is taking place this weekend in Disney's Wide World of Sports Milk House Complex, which is the top-notch facility I was talking about earlier.
Most of the featured people from the critically acclaimed documentary MURDERBALL are competing for the pride of their club teams at this event, which is located just outside Orlando, Florida.
We have three teams at this championship event: The BC Bandits, who are the defending Canadian champs, Ontario Thunder, the silver medallists at the 2006 Coloplast Canadian Wheelchair Rugby Championships, and the Québec Impact, our #3 ranked team which features three members from the National Team.
At the end of the first day, Ontario was the only Canadian team to defeat one of the American teams, as they beat the Hoveround Gunners, who hail from nearby Sarasota Florida. The Gunners are the 4th ranked club team in the US.
BC lost both their games today, to Hoveround and Texas (#3 in the US). Quebec lost to the top 2-ranked teams in the Sates, Phoenix and Lakeshore. The Ontario Thunder lost to Texas by about a 10-goal margin.
In tomorrow's games, Ontario will have to get past BC to get in to the medal rounds, while Quebec faces off against Denver, who are seeded 5th in the States.
All the teams are upbeat though, as they are playing full lines, and everyone is getting a chance to play against against experienced international players. For many of the players on our teams, this is the first time they've seen this level of competition.
That's all for now. Let's hope for another call!
