This weekend, the USQRA Division I and Division II Championships are being held down south in Louisville, Kentucky.
Each team played two games in their respective pools on Friday, and then either had to battle or cruise their way to the medal rounds.
In the case of Dave Willsie and Joe Soares' Hoveround Lightning Team, they'll have to battle it out, since they lost to Lakeshore by 4 and beat Tampa by 5. Meanwhile, the Texas Stampede beat both Lakeshore (by 7) and Tampa (by a lot). When you do the math, it looks like Hoveround will have to beat the Stampede by at least two goals to have a chance to go to the medal round. If they lose, the best they can do is 5th place. Hoveround will be motivated, while Texas might be resting for the next round, as they have already secured a spot. Whatever the motivations, it'll be an interesting game, scheduled to at 1:30pm local time.
Meanwhile, other Canadians are making an impact on the #4 ranked San Diego Bushwhackers (Mister Ian Chan) and the ever dominant Garett Hickling on the surprisingly low-ranked #7 California Quake. Ian's team beat Garett's, holding the seeds, but Garett's team beat the top-ranked team in the pool, the #2 seed Phoenix Heat, who also lost to the host team, the 5th ranked Kentucky TNT. That puts the Heat out of the medal running, and another disappointing season for the Kid's Crew.
Both the Quake and the TNT are at 1-1, with the two teams playing, oh, right about now, to decide who seeks the medals, and who joins Phoenix in the Fight for Fifth.
Meanwhile, back at the ranch, the Division II Nationals are thundering along, with our own Shake 'n Quake lad from London, Mercenary Mike Whitehead! The proud poppa-to-be suits up for the Casco Bay Navigators, who I like since they live in Canadian-like conditions up on the north east end of Maine. That area should have been Canada, but the poorly motivated Brits were bad negotiators way back when. However, I digress, but at least it works as a motivation segway.
The Mainiacs emerged from their division seeded 2nd, and ended up ranked 6th in D2, which put them in the same pool as last year's DII Champs from San Antonio, as well as with the Harlequins who hearken from Denver. Hmmm... never thought I'd use that 'hearken' word, but it seems to fit.
Maine lost their must-win first game to Denver by 6 goals, and came up short over San Antonio by 9. The best they can do now in DII is 5th. They play against the Minnesota Ice today, a team that is just happy to be here.
